Utilizing Students' Culture When Teaching English
30 Nov, 2021 Salah Al-Hanshi

Learning a new language is never an easy task, especially in cases where there are considerable cultural differences between languages. The English language is predominantly associated with the West and all of the cultural values that exist across 'western' nations, which can sometimes create challenges for English teachers who have students with Arabic backgrounds (Zakarneh, 2017). In Oman, where there has always been a well-entrenched Arabic culture, teaching English can prove to be a challenge if these cultural differences are not taken into consideration and implemented in the learning process.

Utilize Cultural Comparisons

Utilizing the students' culture is a useful approach not only in designing effective lessons but also in making sure that students learn and comprehend the new language through their existing cultural lenses. For instance, English language teachers can design lessons that are focused on making cultural comparisons, such as everyday lifestyle differences between western and Arab countries. Teachers can also make their English lessons more engaging through communicative approaches (Saeed Al-Sobhi & Preece, 2018), such as by encouraging students to engage in speaking exercises with each other that would involve typical scenarios from English-speaking countries that are not common or known in Arab cultures.

Use Local Topics

Cultural awareness is also important on the part of English teachers, especially if they are non-Arab. Arab learners may have very different expectations and approaches to studying as opposed to students from western countries. For instance, English teachers may find themselves expected to provide much deeper explanations and corrections to mistakes or to work with students in smaller instead of larger groups (Dirou, 2016). To fully utilize the culture of Omani learners, the best approach for teachers is to use various Omani contemporary topics and trends when designing lessons, and integrating discussions about them through reading and listening materials. This can make lessons more engaging and motivating for learners since they would have greater familiarity with topics and discussions. Equipped with such knowledge, teachers can take advantage of these cultural differences to adapt their lessons accordingly.
